National identity serves as the main form of group identity in the last two hundred years, created on the basis of shared borders, culture, government, economics, ethnicity and production. Yet, it cannot exist without the countries on the other sided of its borders. Globalization, ‘in its purest form’, seeks to eliminate these differences, thus eliminating the counter. This gives birth in many european countries to a search for a national quality that will hold national identity together.
A subtle difference – a bench on the borderline, with a slight deviation in wood grain direction where it changes nation, can define two countries. By using UV protective finish on one part only, as the differences between countries fade, the difference in the bench will grow.
